Photo of dog hugging his friend in viralizing shelter and ends up saving their lives
It’s amazing how a single photograph has the potential to change whole lives, as was the case for these two amazing shelter dogs.
In 2015, Keira and Kala became shelter mates and quickly clung to each other. In a short time, they built a beautiful, intimately linked friendship of heart and soul.
Tragically, they had both been in a shelter that would soon subject them to euthanasia.
That was when with a simple flick of a camera lens, everything began to change and both had a second chance at life.
Atlanta animal rescue organization Angels Among Us Pet Rescue in the US saw the photo and decided to intervene in an attempt to adopt Keira and Kala as soon as possible.
To put pressure on and streamline the adoption process by preventing animals from being euthanized, the organization posted the iconic photo on its Facebook page telling readers about Kala’s poignant story:
“I am Kala, and this is Keira. We are so scared here. People who work in the shelters see how scared we are, but just tell each other that today is the day. We need to be rescued or we will be next. Keira is brave and tells me that everything will be fine no matter what happens. She tells me to be brave too, but I don’t know if I can be. You can see it on our faces. Keira knows what will happen. You can see it in her eyes. She is trying to maintain her aura of courage, but I can feel her heart beating fast as I am clinging to her. If no one saves us, someone will take her away from me. I don’t want to see her being taken in the hallways. She won’t come back and I’ll cry. They will come to me I will not be so brave. We comforted ourselves while we were here. She gave me hope when I had none. Now it’s over. Unless… Unless you act and get us out of here! ”
The heartbreaking post went viral within minutes, and according to Angels Among Us, it took exactly 2 hours and 6 minutes from the time the story was posted until the moment they received the news that Keira and Kala were saved from the euthanasia line.
A girl who saw the photo on the organization’s page contacted the euthanasia clinic and offered to adopt them, backed by Angels Among Us.
The NGO offered to take care of the pair until the woman prepared her home to receive them, although their facilities were already crammed with rescued dogs and cats.
A month later, Pam Cody and Wendy Newman finally picked them up and took them home.
Keira and Kala have a family – two mothers who love them so much and a huge house to play with!
